The Gateway

Based in Flint, Michigan, “The Gateway” is a project which prioritizes placemaking or creating a community hub for local residents. This mixed use building hosts 50 affordable housing apartments as well as a commercial use first floor that includes a cafe, health center, library, community center, and a variety of local businesses. Another important aspect of the project is the site design which hosts winding pedestrian and bike paths to promote walkability and biking, as well as a large community garden, playground, and a variety of community gathering spaces which are flexible in use in order for the community to utilize it how they want. The project gains its namesake from the restoration of the old bank gateway on site, which we developed to become a pedestrian entrance to the site with a variety of community resources in its program. From extensive community research as well as direct constituency engagement, this project directly addresses community needs and works towards Flint’s Masterplan of redeveloping the city.
